Unless you already know me personally, you have probably already asked yourself how to pronounce a my name. . .and that's okay! You are not the first, nor will you be the last. Let me give you an easy little trick that I use often that I have found that is the best way for people to remember my name:
It's like Abraham . . . without the ham.
Growing up with the first name Abra has definitely shaped who I am. If you meet me in person or even on the phone, the above is one of the first things I'll say to you because so many have a hard time grasping my name and how to say it. It's so funny the things people have said to me over the years:
"Did your parents want a boy?" "So. . .Is your last name Cadabra?"
True story, when I was 21, when I was working at Michaels Arts & Crafts store, I met a girl named Abra, in person, for the first time in my life and we shrieked and hugged each other. Complete strangers. My co-workers were definitely taken aback. Try living 21 years never meeting anyone with your name.
It's a novelty to be celebrated with shrieks and hugs.
Funny thing is, now I am jealous of that uniqueness and when people tell me that they know someone named Abra, I'm secretly thinking "BOO!"
I am glad to have my name and when I tell my friends I was almost named Joella they immediately tell me that I could never be anyone but Abra to them and they are glad my parents saw my name in
a baby name book and decided to go for it.
first things first. . .
